English National Ballet

Manchester based agency EDIT contacted me about creating CGI artwork for the campaign image of English National Ballet’s Nutcracker. The aim was to create CGI which would help refresh the advertising image of this classic ballet which has been a staple of Christmas theatre in London for over 50 years. The artwork was for posters, billboards, websites and merchandise.

The brief was to reflect the theme of the newly designed ballet, in which Clara, the main character, travels to the Land of Sweets. The focus was to create images of the various sugary delights that she encounters on her journey, and then place Clara at the centre of this sugar plum world. The challenge was to create renders which were life-like even though they are scaled in size. Myself and the team at Edit had meetings to agree the design of the scene and the composition of the overall piece. Matching the lighting in CGI, with the performer (dancer Swanice Luong) captured in photography, was particularly challenging but essential for the completed scene to look natural and realistic.
